James Pogue is a features writer and author of Chosen Country: A Rebellion in the West and a forthcoming book on rural California. He regularly contributes longform reportage and essays to Harper’s Magazine, where he is a contributing editor, in addition to Vanity Fair, The New York Times, and more.
Pogue’s work focuses on fringe politics and the way that land and ecology influence global politics and statecraft. His writing for VF about the New Right remains highly influential, and is at least to some degree the definitive portrait of the rise of JD Vance. He has embedded with separatists and paramilitary groups around the world, from South Africa and the Sahel to the American West to Northern Ireland. He has received numerous grants from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, and won a 2022 Alicia Patterson Fellowship.
Pogue splits his time between LA and far-northern California. When he’s not on assignment, he enjoys fly fishing, practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, working on habitat restoration, and cultivating Western native plants. You can follow him on X and Instagram.
