International Dog Day might not be an officially sanctioned holiday, but for Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York and ex-wife of Prince Andrew, it’s worth a real celebration. Ever since the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, Sarah and Andrew have been the co-owners of Muick and Sandy, the last dogs remaining from the pack of corgis the queen had cultivated throughout most of her life. On Monday, Ferguson celebrated the UK’s most famous dogs with a post on her Instagram.

“Wishing you and all your furry friends a Happy #InternationalDogDay,” she wrote with a puppy emoji. “For all the unconditional love, loyalty, and joy they bring into our lives, Sandy and Muick will be getting an extra treat on their special day!”

Over the weekend, Andrew and Sarah joined King Charles III and Queen Camilla for a family reunion at Balmoral Castle. According to Express, the pair planned to stay in Craigowan, a cottage on the estate, and would eventually be joined by their daughters, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice. Craigowan, which was reportedly one of the queen’s favorite locations on the estate, was Fergie and Andrew’s home base during their visits to the family’s Scottish hideaway back in the 1980s. It’s a relatively small house, but according to author Ian Lloyd, Prince Philip used to invite all four of his children to spend a weekend with him inside, so it’s likely roomy enough for a trip including the corgis.

It wasn’t a surprise when Sarah and Andrew became Muick and Sandy’s new owners following the queen’s death, because Andrew actually gave her the dogs in the first place. Initially, the queen didn’t want to leave any dogs behind after her death, so she stopped her breeding program about a decade ago. But during the pandemic, Andrew gave her the new corgis to help stave off loneliness. In 2022, a source told ET that Sarah had actually found the dogs herself, and their arrival helped cement her bond with the queen.

“It was the duchess who found the puppies which were gifted to Her Majesty by the duke,” the source said. “The duchess bonded with Her Majesty over dog walking and riding horses and even after her divorce, she would continue her great friendship with Her Majesty, by walking the dogs together and chatting.”
